  • Katha National Award of Literature, 1993.
  • Kamal Kumari Foundation National Award, 1996.
  • International Tulsi Award for the film ‘Adajya’ based on her Novel ‘The Moth Eaten Howdah in 1997. (Rajat Kamal Award).
  • The International Tulsi Award from Florida International University for her book Ramayana From Ganga to Brahmaputra in 1999.
  • Jnanpith Award in 2000.
  • She was conferred D. Litt. degree from Rabindra Bharati University, West Bengal in 2000.
  • Mahiyashi Joymati Award with citation in gold by Ahom court of Assam 2000.
  • Padmashri in 2002 (which she refused).
  • She was awarded Ambassador for peace Award from the Inter Religion and International Federation for world peace, Korea in 2006.
  • She was conferred the Principal Prince Claus Award in 2008 a major honour to a unique writer, activist and political mediator. The large sum she received as an award was donated for the establishment of a hospital in her native village Amranga.
  • ‘D lit’ Degree from Assam University, Silchar Posthumously.
  • She was awarded the ‘Assam Ratna’ posthumously by the Govt. of Assam in 2012.
